This engraving is from A Rake’s Progress, a famous series by William Hogarth (1697–1764), created in 1733–34. It depicts the beginning of the downfall of Tom Rakewell, a young man who inherits a fortune but squanders it through vice and extravagance. In this first scene, Tom is seen squandering money on frivolous luxuries, surrounded by tailors, servants, and sycophants eager to profit from his new wealth. The series, consisting of eight plates, serves as a moral satire on greed, vanity, and the consequences of a dissolute lifestyle.
