This 19th-century engraving depicts a member of a Mohammedan (Muslim) sect of devotees known as an Abdal, Santon, or Kalender. The figure is shown bare-chested with a distinctive cloak and skirt-like garment, carrying a staff and gourd, symbols of ascetic life. His attire and minimal possessions reflect a life of renunciation and spiritual discipline. Such individuals were known for their mystic practices and itinerant lifestyle, often associated with Sufism. The engraving, produced by R. Young and published by A.
