“THE FAITHS IN THE WORLD”. A dictionary of all religions and their religious sects. by The Rev. James Gardner. This engraved portrait depicts John Calvin (1509–1564), a central figure in the Protestant Reformation and the principal developer of Calvinist theology. Shown in a fur-lined robe and cap, Calvin is rendered with a serious and contemplative expression, highlighting his role as a reformer, theologian, and preacher. The portrait is based on a rare print by E. Dunker and was engraved by W. Hall. Calvin’s doctrines emphasized the sovereignty of God, predestination, and the authority of Scripture—ideas that profoundly influenced Reformed churches across Europe and beyond.
