This 19th-century engraving presents the influential English philosopher John Locke, seated in contemplative repose, draped in scholarly robes. Known as the “Father of Liberalism,” Locke’s writings on government, liberty, and human understanding laid foundational principles for modern political thought. The portrait is based on the original painting housed in the Hall of Christ Church, Oxford, and is surrounded by a delicately engraved ornamental border. Engraved by H. Robinson and published by J. & F. Tallis, London & New York.
