This romantic engraving shows a pastoral view of Licenza, Italy, set in a lush mountainous landscape. Ruins scattered in the foreground hint at the site of the ancient Roman poet Horace’s villa. In the middle ground, shepherds tend to a small flock of sheep, while villagers walk across the idyllic terrain. Towering hills and a distant fortified settlement crown the background. Drawn by J.D. Harding and engraved by E. Finden, the print was published in 1838 by J. Murray. It poetically blends classical history with the natural beauty of the Italian countryside.
