“THE FAITHS IN THE WORLD”. A dictionary of all religions and their religious sects. by The Rev. James Gardner. This engraving features two prominent figures from South and Southeast Asian religious traditions, depicted in detailed iconographic style. On the left is Indra, the Vedic god of light, thunder, and rain, riding his majestic white elephant, Airavata. Indra is adorned with regal ornaments and multiple arms holding weapons, symbolizing his warrior role in the celestial realm. On the right is Gotama Buddha (Gautama Buddha), the founder of Buddhism, shown in serene meditation posture seated on a lotus pedestal. His tranquil expression and symbolic hand gestures (mudras) reflect enlightenment and spiritual wisdom. A palm-leaf manuscript beside him alludes to sacred Buddhist texts. Together, these figures illustrate the spiritual diversity of the Indian subcontinent and are labeled under the heading Oriental Divinities.
