This delicate engraving reproduces a line drawing of a wall painting discovered in the ruins of Pompeii. It features a frieze-like depiction of the Twelve Olympian Gods, each identifiable by classical attire, attributes, and posture. Rendered in a restrained, linear style, the image echoes ancient Roman decorative art. Below the main panel, a secondary band of ornamental motifs includes garlands, vessels, and symbolic objects. The artwork offers a glimpse into the religious iconography and artistic conventions of Pompeian wall decoration before the city’s destruction in 79 CE. Engraved by John Le Keux.
