Louis Josephde Bourbon (1736-1818), French soldier and emigre, Son of Lowis Henride Bourbon, duc de Bourbon, Published 1810.
This finely executed engraving presents Prince de Condé, a notable military commander of Bourbon lineage, associated with campaigns during the Thirty Years’ War. Portrayed in richly patterned robes and a broad lace collar, the sitter’s composed profile evokes aristocratic restraint and strategic command. Edward Scriven’s precise linework brings out the texture of curls, embroidery, and the sitter’s introspective gaze. Below the portrait, the inscription identifies the subject and credits the original painter and engraver: “PRINCE DE CONDE,” “Nantuel P.,” and “E. Scriven S.” The print reflects the 19th-century Romantic interest in reimagining historical figures with elegance and reverence.
