This portrait depicts Richard Talbot, 1st Duke of Tyrconnell (1630–1691), an Irish soldier and statesman who served as Lord Deputy of Ireland under King James II. Known for his loyalty to the Stuart monarchy, he played a leading role in attempting to restore Catholic influence in Ireland during the late 17th century. Shown in elaborate attire with a voluminous wig, ornate lace, and a fur-lined robe adorned with insignia of rank, the portrait reflects both his high status and the Baroque fashion of the period.
From the painting in the National Portrait Gallery.
