This ceremonial axe, cast in bronze, exemplifies Nepal’s mastery of religious metalwork. The broad, flaring blade is embellished with repoussé floral scrolls and punched geometric motifs that catch light and shadow, while the slender haft bears incised bands and a tiered collar. The terminal of the shaft culminates in a stylized zoomorphic head—possibly a makara or garuda—symbolizing protective power. A warm, dark patina unifies the piece, indicating prolonged ritual use. Employed in tantric ceremonies to symbolize the cutting of ignorance and attachment, the axe merges Hindu and Buddhist iconography in a single evocative form.
