This finely crafted silver thukdani (spittoon) from early 20th-century North India is a striking example of ornamental metalwork used in daily and ceremonial life. Made entirely of silver, the piece features meticulous repoussé floral designs arranged in radiating segments across the flared rim and bulbous body, highlighting the artisan’s skill and attention to symmetry. Used primarily for spitting paan (betel leaf mixture), the thukdani was a common accessory in aristocratic and upper-class Indian households, reflecting both cultural etiquette and hospitality traditions. The removable lid, adorned with a delicately sculpted finial, further elevates its utility with aesthetic refinement. This object not only served a hygienic function but also stood as a marker of sophistication, blending everyday use with the rich decorative traditions of North Indian silver craftsmanship.
