This serene engraving, drawn by Captain Lyon R.N. and engraved by Edward Finden, captures a vast Arctic seascape as seen from the western end of Amherst Island. Two figures stand in the foreground surveying the still waters and distant mountain ranges. The image marks the western entrance to the Strait of the Fury and Hecla, a significant location in early 19th-century polar exploration. The composition conveys both the majesty of the Arctic wilderness and the sense of isolation felt by explorers as their progress was halted by impassable ice.
