This sepia-toned portrait depicts William Makepeace Thackeray, a prominent 19th-century English novelist, best known for his satirical works such as Vanity Fair. He is seen standing in a formal pose, dressed in a mid-Victorian suit with a waistcoat and cravat. The image is a reproduction of a photograph taken around 1863 by L. Caldesi & Co., when Thackeray was approximately 52 years old. The background features classical drapery and a column, suggesting a dignified, intellectual setting. The photograph was once in the possession of Mrs. Wilson Crewdson. The engraving is credited to Emery Walker, a noted British engraver and printer.
