This detailed engraving depicts Christopher Columbus, the famed Italian explorer credited with opening the Americas to European colonization. Columbus is shown seated with a contemplative expression, dressed in elaborate Renaissance attire including a hat and a richly textured cloak. Behind him are pieces of armor, hinting at his adventurous and military background. The artwork is based on a painting by Parmigiano housed in the Royal Gallery at Naples, and the engraving was executed by W. Greatbach. The print was published in London by George Routledge & Sons.
