This engraved portrait represents the Earl of Chesterfield, a title held by members of the Stanhope family, notable in British politics and society from the 17th century onward. The figure is depicted with flowing hair, a lace cravat, and a luxurious cloak, exemplifying the style of English aristocracy during the Restoration period. Based on a painting by Sir Peter Lely, court artist to Charles II, and engraved by E. Scriven, the image captures the refinement and cultivated appearance typical of noblemen in post-Civil War England. Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl of Chesterfield (1634-1714) a Peer in the Peerage of England and Lord Chamberlain to Catherine of Braganza.
